NAWCA Staff Tour Projects and Playas in OK, KS and CONorth American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) Council staff got a first hand look at two proposed NAWCA projects and gained insight on playas’ values to migratory birds during a whirlwind three-state tour hosted by PLJV partners May 28 – June 1. The future of these and other playas not in CRP depends largely on the outcome of the 2007 Farm Bill debate. Featured Project: Lower South Platte Wetland InitiativeThis Small NAWCA project involved the restoration, acquisition and long-term management of 500 acres of wetlands and 1,100 acres of uplands along the lower South Platte River. The Lower South Platte River corridor provides important migratory and nesting habitat for hundreds of thousands of waterfowl such as Northern Pintails, Wood Ducks and Mallards, as well as at-risk species such as Piping Plovers and Interior Least Terns. Follow the Money: New Mexico River Restoration GrantsThe Surface Water Quality Bureau of the New Mexico Environment Department is soliciting proposals for projects that will restore in-stream ecosystem function and watershed health to major NM river basins.
