Planning in Action

Farm Bill and Birds

More than 90% of the PLJV landscape is in agricultural production, so Farm Bill conservation programs provide some of the best means to conserve bird habitat in the region. Initiatives like the Conservation Reserve Program provide substantial benefits for birds. Over the past few years, the PLJV has been working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service and Farm Service Agency to help target and evaluate Farm Bill conservation programs for bird conservation. Helping Partners

The number of partners the PLJV has helped to target, evaluate and improve bird conservation programs is manifold. From helping the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service model the bird conservation outcomes of its Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program, to assisting Nebraska implement its State Action Plan. Here are some recent examples:

Shortgrass Prairie Partnership
The PLJV provided geospatial and biological models to help the Shortgrass Prairie Partnership conduct an assessment of the central shortgrass prairie and target areas for conservation work.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
PLJV helped Region 6 of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service model the biological outcomes of the agency’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program’s 5-year habitat objectives.

Ducks Unlimited
The PLJV worked with the Ducks Unlimited to determine the waterfowl conservation contributions of two recent North American Wetlands Conservation Act proposals – Jamestown Wildlife in Kansas, and Drummond Flats in Oklahoma.

Nebraska Natural Legacy Project
The PLJV collaborated with Nebraska partners to create a unique conservation post that is using the PLJV’s HABS database to bridge the gap between planning and on-the-ground habitat work.

Oklahoma State University
The PLJV used its GIS-based Lesser Prairie-chicken range models to help Oklahoma State University determine where to remove invasive Eastern Red Cedar trees in areas that would provide the most benefit to the birds.

Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks
The PLJV used its GIS-based playa location data to help the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, Kansas Alliance for Wetlands and Streams and Farm Service Agency target enrollment of playas into the Wetlands Restoration Non-Floodplain initiative.
