The Playas: Reflections of Life on the Plains
In 2006, in an effort to raise awareness about conserving our vital wetlands, the Playa Lakes Joint Venture produced The Playas: Reflections of Life on the Plains.
No where on Earth can you find as many playas as in the High Plains, with more than 50,000 in the six-state area of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. The wetlands provide safe havens for millions of migratory birds and are the primary source of recharge for the Ogallala Aquifer. Despite these benefits, playas remain critically endangered wetlands and are fading from the landscape faster than people can protect them.
This 30-minute film explores the nature of playas, the value they bring to the region and how High Plains residents are working to protect these vital resources. The film features sweeping aerial footage of playas captured by hot air balloon and interviews with playa experts, biologists, landowners and community leaders throughout the six-state playa lakes region.
